If you’re helping a loved one get out of jail, you may be asked to “cosign” the bail bond. Here’s what that means and what you’re responsible for.
What Is a Cosigner?
A cosigner (also called an indemnitor) is the person who signs the bail bond agreement on behalf of the defendant and takes legal and financial responsibility for it. This is usually a family member or close friend, not the defendant themselves.
What a Cosigner Is Responsible For
- Paying the bail bond fee to the bondsman
- Making sure the defendant appears at all required court dates
- Covering the full bail amount if the defendant fails to appear in court
- Any collateral used to secure the bond, if applicable
Do You Need Good Credit to Cosign?
Not always — requirements vary by bondsman and the size of the bond. Call and we’ll explain exactly what’s needed for your specific situation.
